A fire reportedly broke out in the main power control room of a hospital in Kota Kinabalu earlier today, forcing at least 28 patients to be relocated to other buildings.

Bernama reports that the fire at KPJ Specialist Hospital in Damai started around 5.30am.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that firemen had faced difficulty putting out the blaze due to the thick smoke.

“The firemen managed to put out the blaze at 8.17am. The firefighters and hospital staff had to vacate the block as thick smoke begun to engulf the building,” the statement said.

According to the report, the fire — believed to have been caused by a short-circuit — had destroyed 90 percent of the main control room.
