Now that Malaysia is – slowly – coming to grips with Dr Mahathir working hand-in-hand with his old political rivals in the Opposition to oust Najib Razak out of Putrajaya, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that national politics is in uncharted waters.
Take PAS Youth’s decision to organise, of all things, a snooker competition to get more young voters on its side.
Yeah. They know.
Titled the Piala Ketua Pemuda PAS Malaysia (PAS Youth Chief Malaysia Cup), the “Syariah-compliant” snooker tournament is set to take place in Selayang on March 27, according to a Facebook update posted yesterday to the personal account of PAS Youth treasurer Muhtar Suhaili As-Sarawaki.
It even has a nifty and totally not awkward poster:

In order for the snooker tournament to stay in line with PAS’s platform of upholding Islamic principles in all aspects of Malaysian life, the organisers have assured the public that in no way will the event condone any consumption of alcohol, gambling, or intermingling of the sexes.
We’re guessing that means no barroom brawling, either.
Added plus: the all-day event will also impose mandatory prayer breaks so all the competitors can head down to the nearby surau before they head back to the smoky pool hall to resume their quest for the coveted RM1,000 top prize.
If you’re game for some truly bizarre snooker action this month, you know who to hit up. (The country’s preeminent Islamist party.) Registrations cost RM50 a head.
