Malaysian political leaders have reached a consensus on what they will do next following Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister, but did not reveal what that is.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said this to reporters outside the palace, after a two-hour meeting with the king, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. He said that all political party leaders seemed to agree that there should be a new political landscape to move the country forward in light of the COVID-19 and economic crises, without elaborating further.
“Everyone (party leaders present at the meeting) gave their opinions, and it seems that there is a consensus to end the old (political) ways and focus on developing the nation,” the 74-year-old said. He is also the chief of the People’s Justice Party, or PKR.
Anwar was joined by Lim Guan Eng, the secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party, and Mohamad Sabu, the president of the Amanah party. Others who met the king include UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir, and Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, the deputy president of the Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS.
During the meeting, the king stressed that the next prime minister should not be resentful towards those who did not succeed, Anwar said, without mentioning who he was referring to.
“This means, whoever gets (the prime minister’s post) should not ‘take revenge’ on those who lost,” he said.
Tuan Ibrahim was the first political party leader to arrive at the palace at 1:34pm followed by Mukhriz, Zahid, Lim and Mohamad. Opposition chief and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim arrived at 1:59pm.
