Parang-wielding robbing couple taken down by Subang Jaya residents

A young couple intent on holding up a convenience store in Subang Jaya with parangs were subdued and apprehended by members of the public in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Subang Jaya district police deputy chief Supt Lee Swee Meng told Harian Metro that the pair, a 38-year old man and his 19-year old girlfriend, had entered the convenience store at 12.30am with parangs and threatened the staff, demanding cash from the register and several cartons of cigarettes.

“The suspects’ actions were noticed by members of the public in the area, who removed the keys to the motorcycle the suspects had arrived in to prevent their escape,” Lee said.

After the robbery, both suspects attempted to flee the scene on foot, but the woman was apprehended by police officers near the convenience store.

The male suspect managed to escape undetected, possibly ducking into the housing area nearby.

“However, at 8am yesterday (Monday), police received a call from local residents who had apprehended a man believed to have been involved in the convenience store robbery,” Lee said.

The locals had noticed the suspect sleeping on a sofa placed behind a house in the area, while they were conducting a gotong-royong activity in the neighbourhood.

After he was brought in for police questioning, the male suspect confessed that he was indeed one of the two robbers from Saturday morning.

Both suspects are now in detention at the USJ8 police station for further investigations.

The case is being probed under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code and Section 447 of the Penal Code.
