The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition will hold a mass rally to protest the court decisions against Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Karpal Singh this Friday, just two days before the Kajang by-election in which PKR will be going head-to-head with the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA).
“We urge them (participants) to come in black to protest the injustices done,” PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang told a press conference in Parliament here today.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and de facto PKR and PR leader Anwar Ibrahim had his 2012 acquittal on the charges of sodomy overturned in the Court of Appeal on March 7, with a sentence of five years in prison. Anwar’s defence team is expected to challenge the decision in the Federal Court.
Meanwhile, DAP chairman Karpal Singh was found guilty of sedition over his remarks concerning the role of the Sultan of Perak in the 2009 state constitutional crisis.
Following the fresh trial after the prosecution’s successful 2012 appeal of Karpal’s previous acquittal, the judge ruled last month that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt. Karpal was fined RM4000, and is at risk of losing his parliamentary seat in Bukit Gelugor.
The rally will be held at the Kajang Stadium at 9pm, and top Pakatan Rakyat leaders are expected to speak at the event.
