Malaysian internet users who insulted the royal insitution, especially following the passing of Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak, will be tracked down and be subject to legal action, said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today.
MCMC chair Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi put out an appeal to the public to help his commission treack down social media users who published offending remarks over Sultan Azlan Shah’s death.
The Malay Mail Online reports Sharil saying, “We are acting to trace those individuals and ask members of the public who have any information that can help in MCMC’s investigations to step forward and provide the information.
“We view such insults seriously and will take necessary action based on the laws as provided in the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.”
Up until June of lastyear, the MCMC had investigated 29 cases of alleged insult against Islam and the Malay rulers.
Several of these cases have been forwarded to the courts, including an October 2013 suit where a Facebook user was fined RM20,000 for making insulting remarks about Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor.
