The Malaysia Prisons Department wants you to know that they absolutely did not publish an online greeting welcoming convicted ex-prime minister Najib Razak to its Sungai Buloh facility.
The department quickly called out the fabricated image today as it emerged online moments after the appeals court ruled it was upholding the 68-year-old’s guilty conviction for money laundering and corruption, which came with a 12 years’ jail sentence and a US$50 million fine.
The prisons department reshared the image online, this time with the word “fake” added to it, without saying anything else.
In the image, a text said: “Welcome Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak (former prime minister) to the Sungai Buloh Prison… Sincerely, Malaysia Prisons Department.”
It also contained a photo of Najib in blue and the prisons department’s logo.
Najib remains guilty of corruption and money laundering involving the misappropriation of RM42 million (US$10 million) that was transferred into his personal bank account. But the Court of Appeal, which today branded him a “national embarrassment,” has granted him a stay of execution pending his appeal to Malaysia’s highest court.
