Ever wanted to snowboard down Jalan Bukit Bintang? How about slaloming your way to work? If you’re tired of that old skateboard gathering dust in the corner of your room, and think even your BMX has too many wheels, you might want to chip in for the Onewheel.
The self-balancing skateboard weighs in at a prodigious 25 pounds, but uses an electric motor to keep a brisk 12 mph pace. It’s also loaded up with accelerometers, gyroscopes and a microcontroller to keep you on the board and your mind off of actually learning to use the contraption: the Onewheel’s inventor, Kyle Doerksen says that the Onewheel is designed to allow users to quickly get the hang of riding it, and the speed limitations are software-limited (which leads us to think someone’s bound to hack the internals to get this thing flying off the road at some point).
If you’d like to own a Onewheel for urban careening purposes, the project’s Kicksrtarter page is awaiting your pledge. It’s already gone well over its goal of USD100,000 but as with all things crowdfunded, you’re pledging at your own risk. Remember how everyone got butthurt when the Ouya didn’t solve all the world’s problems at launch? USD1299 gets you a standard Onewheel, and USD1399 bags you a Onewheel with an Ultra Charger, which lets you get the Onewheel up and ready to go in 20 minutes flat.
Here’s a video of the Onewheel in action:
