One of Malaysia’s richest men spotted picking up trash on the streets

It’s not every day you see a billionaire rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty.

Last Saturday, Facebook user Gary Chong shared on his social media page several pictures of a group of “mature and elderly Asian gentlemen” picking up rubbish along the pavements of Bandar Sunway.

“Today, I was taking a little evening stroll around Bandar Sunway when I chanced upon a group of mature and elderly looking Asian gentlemen who were walking in a pack and picking up little bits of trash on their way, be it small bits of used tissue paper to little strands of plastic strewn on the pavements and the green landscape around the surrounding buildings,” he wrote.

Chong wrote that he initially thought they were Japanese tourists because he had seen them doing the same thing while he was holidaying in Japan.

However, when he got closer, he heard the group speaking in a very distinctive Malaysian accent and he noticed that the gentleman leading the group looked very familiar.

After a quick Google search, the man turned out to be none other than Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Jeffrey Cheah, founder and chairman of the Sunway Group and according to Forbes, the 18th richest man in Malaysia with a net worth of USD865 million (RM3.6 billion).

“Respect with a capital “R” to this guy for leading his team who by their age, should be corporate directors and the big guns of the Sunway Group,” he wrote.

Chong added that the men then worked their way towards Sunway Pyramid, a property under Cheah’s Sunway Group.

“I thought, wow, this is truly an amazing thing to see a billionaire and giant icon across a multitude of industries, doing something so simple and humble.

“Doing his little bit to take care of the community and infrastructure which he and his group has built over the years…such an inspiration!” Chong wrote.

According to Chong, Cheah was then seen getting into a “blazing red” Ferrari in front of the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa.

Chong’s post has since gone viral on the social media site, having been shared more than 500 times, and Netizens were quick to praise Cheah’s effort.

“Good on you Tan Sri! A billionaire hero who doesn’t have to don a cape and save his city in the dark of night,” Chong wrote.
