After a series of attacks on its Facebook page over a seemingly racist job vacancy notice, the Oldtown White Coffee franchisee involved in the controversy has issued an apology.
In an updated statement sent to Coconuts KL yesterday, the company said it had contacted directors of Paramount Grand Success Sdn Bhd to explain the offending advertisement.
The company said the ad, which explicitly mentioned a preference for Malay and Chinese applicants, was never meant to discriminate.
“However, due to their own negligence, some supporters of Oldtown White Coffee have been misguided to infer that the company was being disrespectful. They have expressed their regret and sincere apologies for this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
It added that the advertisement has been removed and ‘appropriate action’ has been taken to avoid a repeat.
In the apology letter, Paramount Grand Success explained that it welcomed all races in its recruitment process and that the ad was aimed at Malays and Chinese because it already had ‘a substantial number of Indian staff’.
“…we only intended to maintain a balance of all races in our outlets,” its two directors N. Vijayamogan and R.Kannappan said in the letter.
