Malaysia’s biggest bread manufacturer and possibly every Malaysian’s favorite bread, Gardenia Bakeries Sdn Bhd (KL), have unfortunately announced a price hike on some of their products starting September 1, due to supply chain issues and the new minimum wage increase.
According to a statement released by Gardenia yesterday, the cost of products such as high protein flour (up 25%), egg white powder (up more than 100%), wholemeal flour, gluten, skim milk, bread improver, and packaging materials have all significantly increased.
“This also coupled with several challenges such as the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on businesses, and the flooding in Shah Alam in December last year.
“(And) more recently, the global supply chain crisis and implementation of the minimum wage from May 1.
“All these are beyond our control and have severely impacted Gardenia KL operations.”
It claimed that after months of a thorough evaluation, analysis, and option exploration, the new prices, which go into effect the next month, were made.
“Increasing the price of our products has always been the absolute last resort when all other efforts have been taken to maximise the efficiency of our operations.
“We remain committed to our consumers and to supply fresh bread 365 days a year, seven days a week, rain or shine.
“Thank you to all our loyal consumers for their longstanding support and understanding.”
The Original Classic will now cost RM3.00 per loaf, Gardenia Wholemeal RM4.00 per loaf, Gardenia Toast’em range RM5.50 per loaf, Gardenia Twiggies RM2.00 per packet, Gardenia Waffles RM1.50, and Gardenia cream rolls RM1.10 per piece, according to the company’s amended pricing.
According to the company, the marginal price increase for Gardenia Original Classic white bread is RM0.20 (7%), while the price rise for high protein flour is 25%.
However, Gardenia KL is continuing to sell its 500g Gardenia Bonanza Keluarga bread at the same price of RM2.75.
