It seems like all you need these days to (temporarily) avoid the long arm of the law is a cool demeanor, and Kanye West-levels of confidence.
It worked for Floorplan Man, at least until he got arrested. Now, it’s worked for an inmate who successfully posed as another prisoner who was being bailed. Claiming to be the soon-to-be released man, he walked free as a tree out of jail, with no further questions from present officials.
He had been previously arrested and sentenced to prison for a string of offenses including drugs, break-ins, and theft.
His ill-gotten freedom occurred yesterday at 11:30am, after a lock-up supervisor got a call on a bail notice for a 22-year-old inmate. A source spoke to The Sun Daily and told them that the two officers who were on duty last night held the rank constable and corporal.
When the bail notice arrived, one of the supervisor’s called out the inmate’s name. There was no response. The supervisor then called out out the name several more times (Bueller… Bueller), and moments later an inmate appeared claiming to be the man. He was then released, no ID or questions asked. Apparently, it’s that easy, kids.
Only later when rounds were made did the supervisor realize that he had released the wrong inmate. The man they freed was sentenced to six-months imprisonment on October 11, just the day before the snafu.
The man who was actually supposed to be bailed? Well, turns out he was still in his cell. Freedom may be sweet for some, but not everyone likes dessert.
Police are now trying to trace the inmate they freed.
He’s been identified as 39-year-old Azrulnizam Arif, and was last wearing an orange T-shirt and purple shorts. Bold sartorial choices for a man on the run.
We’re not gonna lie. The whole situation reminds us more than a little of this scene in Monty Python’s Life of Brian.
