October 4 will be Malaysia’s first Grandparents’ Day (call your grandmother, she misses you)

The Malaysian government has decided to honour the warga emas in our lives with the country’s inaugural Grandparents’ Day celebration, on October 4 this year.

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Rohani Karim announced the news today, saying that grandparents were integral to the family.

“To recognise the role of our datuk (grandfather) and nenek (grandmother), our ministry is happy to announce that the country’s first ever Grandparents’ Day will fall on Oct 4 this year,” she said, as quoted by The Star Online

From this year onwards, Grandparents’ Day will be celebrated in Malaysia on the first Sunday of every October.

Poland was the first country to celerate Grandparents’ Day, in 1964, followed by Japan in 1966.

“The United States and several other countries, including our neighbour Singapore, adopted the celebration soon after,” Rohani said.
