Nurul Nuha: German envoy to check on Anwar Ibrahim’s prison conditions

Jailed Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim will receive a visit from a representative of the German embassy at Sungai Buloh Prison, as a measure to ensure he is receiving human treatment while in jail.

Anwar’s daughter Nurul Nuha announced that the visit was a result of her family’s “March to Freedom” campaign, which aims to secure Anwar’s release from prison, after he wa convicted of sodomising his former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008.

“As part of the March to Freedom campaign, we have been meeting ambassadors, engaging with human rights activists,” Nurul Nuha told The Malay Mail Online‘s Shazwan Mustafa Kamal.

“It is quite fortunate that most embassies are very concerned. World leaders have expressed their disappointment.”

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had earlier said Anwar would not be accorded any special treatment while in prison. Anwar claims he should not be treated as an ordinary inmate, as he is a prisoner of conscience.

“According to the lawyers, the prison guards are making him take part in morning marches, he is being made to sing the national anthem and also sing ‘selamat pagi cikgu’ (good morning, teacher) as part of a routine salute to the guards,” Nurul Nuha said.
