Interim prime minister Ismail Sabri today declared that November 18 and November 19, 2022 will be public holidays in order to make it easier for voters to return to vote in the 15th general election on Nov. 19.
“The government has decided that Friday and Saturday will be public holidays to make it easier for voters,” he said at a Cuepacs event here.
Cuepacs, the umbrella organisation for civil service unions, had previously suggested that the government make November 18 a holiday so that Malaysians may travel to their needed locations to cast their votes in the general election the following day.
Malaysia is set to go to the polls on Saturday, with early voting set for tomorrow.
Last week, Selangor’s chief minister, Amirudin Shari declared Nov 18 as a state holiday, in light of polling day.
He explained that the decision was made since many Malaysians work and live in Selangor yet vote in their hometowns in other regions.
To make it simpler for Malaysians to vote on November 19, he had also encouraged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to proclaim November 18 a national holiday for all citizens.
