Notorious Menora Tunnel claims another victim

Just days after a bus rammed into 10 vehicles near the Menora Tunnel, the notorious accident hotspot has claimed yet another victim.

According to a report by The Star Online, a Mitsubishi Triton plunged into a 50m-deep ravine on Wednesday, killing its driver and seriously injuring a passenger.

Deputy Perak police traffic chief DSP Mohd Mahiri Hussin told the news portal that the driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Muhd Safiq Dainal Alias, was killed while his passenger, Mohamad Nor Hafiz Mohd Ridzuan, 20, was seriously injured in the accident at the KM260 mark of the North-South Expressway.

Muhd Safiq was believed to have lost control of the vehicle as the road was slippery due to the torrential downpour earlier, DSP Mohd Mahiri told The Star Online.

“Both victims were thrown out of the vehicle when it eventually fell into the ravine,” he was quoted as saying.

Mohamad Nor Hafiz was reportedly rushed to the Kuala Kangsar Hospital while Muhd Safiq’s remains were taken to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for a post-mortem.

The Menora Tunnel has gained a reputation for being a deadly stretch as several fatal accidents have been reported this year.

On March 3, a family of four were burnt to death when their car was crushed under a trailer, which had caught fire after crashing into a divider.

On May 15, two women were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a divider at the 257km mark.
