It’s not just you: SE Asian Internet slower after several undersea cables damaged

If you’ve been noticing that your Wi-Fi connection seems slower than normal, there’s an explanation and it’s not your sneaking suspicion that a neighbor is taking up all the bandwidth downloading the latest Game of Thrones.

Turns out several undersea fiber optic cables have broken, and are causing the entire Southeast Asian region to experience slow Internet connections.

Reports from tech and local websites have pointed to problems with SEA’s Asia-American Gateway (AAG), Intra Asia (TGN-IA) and SEA-ME-WE3 (SMW3) submarine cable systems, beginning August 27.

Tropical storms that have recently hit the region are being blamed for the technical mishaps. In the past, similar cuts in cables have been blamed on shipping vessels, as well as sharks.

A Reddit thread dedicated to the topic, has indicated that repairs should be complete by October 13.

Until then, expect those Korean drama downloads to take a bit longer than normal.
