Thieves in Kelantan, watch out: even without hudud law in effect, you could probably lose a body part if you mess around.
One of two snatch thieves on the run from a mob of angry witnesses nearly lost an ear after being captured and beaten in an incident in Kampung Tanjung Chat, Kelantan, yesterday evening.
According to Kota Baru district police chief ACP Rohaimi Md Isa, at around 7pm a 50-year old woman was robbed of her handbag as she was approaching the front gate of her home.
As quoted by The Malay Mail Online, ACP Rohaimi said the victim’s son and another relative, who saw the snatch theft happen, rushed to her aid, but were stopped by one of the suspects who hit them with a piece of wood.
“The suspects fled on a motorcycle they had left at the side of the road.
“But about an hour later, the duo were accosted by members of the public about 200 metres from the scene,” said Rohaimi.
(Wait, they only got 200m away, an hour after the robbery? These are some pretty confident thieves.)
Upon their arrest by the police, one suspect was found to be seriously injured on the left ear and cheek, and is now being treated at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital. The other suspect had light injuries and is under police detention.
“Investigations revealed both suspects in their 30s, from Tumpat, have a previous conviction record for drugs and causing hurt,” said Rohaimi.
The stolen handbag, said to contain RM1,000 in cash, a bank book, and several valuable items, is still missing.
