Not again: Hundreds can’t make online credit card transactions due to CIMB outage

Customers of local bank CIMB have not been able to make online credit card transactions due to a system outage that began around noon yesterday.

More than 24 hours after the problem surfaced, the bank has not officially addressed the issue but has told customers on Twitter to try accessing its app instead, which also appears to be broken. 

A check on the CIMB website on Wednesday afternoon showed that the page was “under maintenance.”

“System Downtime. We are currently undergoing system maintenance. We apologize for the maintenance caused. Thank you for your understanding,” the page read. 

The bank’s customer service staff told users on Twitter to download and log into their CIMB Clicks Malaysia app to perform transactions instead.

“Hi, we are working on fixing the issue with our Clicks web browser. In the meantime, you may log-in to Clicks via mobile app. Thank you and stay safe!”

App reviews posted to Google Play Store today showed users complaining about the app being either “broken,” “slow,” or under maintenance.

Hundreds have complained about the issue online, highlighting that the issue was bad timing as bills were usually due at the start of the month. 

“Hi CIMB clicks @CIMB_Assists, can you please not go rogue on the 1st-2nd days of the month? People need to pay bills, lah,” Twitter user @ElphabaThropp7 wrote online this morning.

Others felt like they had traveled back in time when slow internet speeds were the norm. 

“I didn’t know CIMB manages to time-travel back to the 1980s to deliver this kind of internet banking service site,” @Afifizawawie wrote on Twitter. 

@Mimiritory thinks CIMB should treat its customers better, especially as they had been loyal to the bank despite its unsatisfactory service. 

“How patient and loyal am I? Even though [CIMB] clicks cause me so many problems, I’m still using it. Damn, I deserve so much better,” the user wrote on Twitter. 

As one of Malaysia’s top banks, CIMB is also notorious for its IT hiccups. A similar issue occurred in September last year as well as a security breach two years ago that cost customers thousands of ringgit.
