Alert bank officers stop elderly woman from being conned

If it wasn’t for two helpful bank officers, an elderly woman would have lost all of her savings.

According to The Star Online, a 72-year-old woman went to a Maybank branch located at People’s Park in Singapore to make a huge withdrawal of S$200,000 (RM600,000).

As a huge amount was involved, the bank’s senior customer service officer Christine Ting sat down and had a talk with the elderly woman.

“I asked what the money was for and she told me that it was for her friend, who was having some problems with foreign immigration.

“I sensed something was not right and kept asking her for more information,” Christine told the news portal in a phone interview.

Christine added that the woman then showed her the messages she exchanged with her ‘friend’.

Sensing something amissed, Christine then alerted Doreen Ong, the branch’s assistant service manager. Both officers reportedly took the woman into a private room and tried to prevent her from withdrawing the money.

The woman then reportedly left the bank without making the withdrawal and the bank officers immediately alerted the police.

As it turns out, Singaporean police later found out that a conman was behind the episode.

According to the authorities, as reported by The Star, the elderly woman had been in contact with the conman via WhatsApp and Facebook for more than five years.

She had also reportedly transferred a total of S$75,500 (RM226,122) on two previous occasions.

And she could be S$200,000 poorer, too, if not for the helpful bank officers.
