Rest easy, folks.
There’s no plastic in those Hup Seng’s crackers — Malaysia’s teatime snack of choice.
The Health Ministry has reportedly assured consumers that the longtime favourite biscuit does not have plastic as an ingredient.
The Star Online quoted the ministry’s Senior Director for Food Safety and Quality Noraini Othman as saying that Hup Seng has implemented the right food safety standards in the making of these crackers.
“The Ministry of Health has verified the food safety assurance programme implemented by Hup Seng and found no evidence of plastic being used as an ingredient in making biscuits,” she told the news site.
Hup Seng’s Ping Pong Special Cream Crackers made headlines recently, when a video claiming that the biscuits were coated with a later of plastic, made its rounds on social media.
The video, posted on Facebook by a user called Emo-ji on July 29, showed the cracker being burnt with a lighter.
The company had earlier defended the production of its famous crackers, rubbishing the allegations.
“With regards to the case of burning biscuits, we would like to share that it is the characteristic of flour or oil related food products that they will combust or burn,” the company said in a statement on July 30.
“However, this ability to combust has no direct correlation or effect on food safety. Our Hup Seng Ping Pong Special Cream Crackers are safe for consumption.”
Hup Seng also said, as reported by local media, that the video was an attempt to tarnish the company’s reputation.
