No more live-in domestic helpers from Indonesia

Indonesia wants its women, working abroad as domestic helpers, to be hired as formal workers with stipulated working hours, effectively stopping from being employed as live-in maids. 

Indonesian Ambassador Herman Prayitno said they should also have a day off every week. 

“We want a formal contract between the domestic helper and the employer. Just like the contracts drawn up for employment in companies,” The Star Online quoted him as saying.

The number of maids in Malaysia has dwindled too; from about 300,000 registered helpers (80 per cent of the Indonesian) some seven years ago to just 200,000 (50,000 Indonesians) now, Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies (Papa) president Jeffrey Foo told the portal.
