No Fly Zone: hundreds stranded as KLIA’s Aerotrain breaks down

Travellers hoping to board their flights were left hanging earlier today, as Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) Aerotrain service broke down for about two hours.

After the trains, which connect KLIA’s main terminal to its satellite aircraft bays, shut down at around 1pm, the airport’s operators Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) moved to deploy buses to ferry passengers to their flights. Announcements regarding the status of the train service was also piped through the PA system every five minutes.

However, that did not immediately ease the traffic congestion that quickly built up at and around the Aerotrain station. Images of a crowd of hundreds of stranded travellers spread on social media.

An MAHB spokesperson told The Star Online‘s P Divakaran that at least one of the Aerotrains was back up and running as normal by 2.58pm.

No explanation was given as to why the Aerotrain service was disrupted today, other than it was a series of “technical problems”.
