Newborn abandoned at doorstep of Penang mosque

A newborn girl — with her umbilical cord still attached — was left at the steps of a mosque in Penang last night.

Bernama reports that the baby was wrapped in a towel and placed at the steps of the Sungai Gelugor Mosque sometime before Maghrib prayers.

According to one Mohammad Hafiz Mohammad Zaidi, 26, a woman had heard the child’s cries and then immediately alerted the rest of the congregation just after prayers at 8pm.

“As soon as we were told, we went to the steps and found a baby girl crying. I immediately informed the imam and other members of the congregation,” he was quoted as saying.

Fortunately, the baby, who was later sent to the Penang Hospital, was declared healthy.

Northeast District Police Chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said footage from closed circuit television cameras would be examined and urged those who had any information to come forward.
