Sabah’s new state chief minister Hajiji Noor will be sworn-in at the palace tomorrow morning, days after a coalition led by National Alliance (PN) won Saturday’s elections.
Hajiji, 65, is the leader of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu) in Sabah and had won the Sulaman state against Aliasgar Basri from the former ruling party Warisan and Rekan Hussien from the Love Sabah Party. PN named Hajiji as the chosen chief minister earlier today, in a choice between him and the National Front (BN) president Bung Moktar Radin.
He will be sworn in at the palace tomorrow at 10:30am, according to a press statement.
“The Sabah People’s Coalition has agreed to form the new Sabah government led by me,” Hajiji told reporters in Kota Kinabalu, later adding: “We will fulfill our responsibility to the people.”
He was accompanied by Bung Moktar and Homeland Solidarity Party (STAR) party leader Jeffrey Kitingan, among others.
Over the weekend, more than a million Sabahans elected a new state government. The PN’s coalition won a razor-thin majority, snagging 38 out of 73 seats, while the Warisan-led coalition won 32 seats. Independent candidates Rubin Balang and Rudy Awah also secured a seat each.
Former Sabah chief minister and Warisan leader Shafie Apdal, 73, did not concede defeat, saying that his party won the highest number of seats.
“The results showed that the one single party which won the most seats is Warisan – we won 29 seats.” he told the press after the election results were announced on Sunday. Shafie successfully defended his Senallang state seat with a resounding majority of 4,631 votes.
The PN-led coalition, called the Sabah People’s Coalition, also comprises BN and The United Sabah People’s Party.
