An argument could be made against a 10-man hip-hop crew needing to feature yet another rapper on a single, but we guess when said featured rapper has a breakout single with almost 3 million views on YouTube and a string of commercial and critical accolades, it’s understandable.
Local rap unit The Bat Cave (comprising of emcees Dafrosty, Saphuan, G, Bane Laden, DMent, Zafrin, Zet Legacy, Klash, K-Main and DJ Jazzy Day – phew) of the Rogue Squadron collective have just dropped their new single and music video for “Bukan Tunjuk Bagus” featuring DJ Fuz’s Mixology imprint’s most visibile signee WARIS. Content-wise, it’s a classic bragging rights track with plenty of visual flourish – the entire crew submerge themselves in a swimming pool in one scene, probably in perverse homage to Malaysian celebrities loving to pose at poolsides for glam shots – and bolstered by a spare, relentless beat by Bane Laden:

In its first 24 hours on YouTube, the music video has already gotten a fairly healthy 3500 views, but as is usually the case, negative comments have started to stream in, primarily in the form of fans’ reaction to WARIS linking up to what mainstream rap fans see as a bunch of upstarts:

Is the tradition of hip-hop collaboration starting to grate on Malaysian listeners, or is it just a case of haters, hating?
