Nearly 12% of Malaysians have diabetes and another 5% may be undiagnosed

Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam released a statement yesterday in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, telling Malaysians that diabetes cases were on the rise in the country, with 3.6 million sufferers.

He added, worryingly that another 1.8 million may be suffering from it, but have not had proper screening to determine their diagnosis.

He added that early detection, and coinciding treatment, was important for effective diabetes management, and allows “patients to lead normal lives.”

Prevention, like in many cases, is key, and the minister hopes that increased awareness will change Malaysians’ behavior and lead them to healthier lifestyle choices. Like maybe not getting that kopi with sweetened milk.

Worryingly, women were now more than half of the total sufferers, with 1.78 million being diagnosed, many of whom develop the disease pregnant.

It’s not rocket science to eat healthy, but it is hard. One step at a time, Malaysians. One less teh tarik a day.
