National cyclist Azizulhasni Awang is rubbing his Commonwealth Games hosts in Glasgow the wrong way by prominently displaying his support for Gaza in the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian armed conflict.
As a show of support and solidarity with the cause, Azizulhasni has had the phrase “Save Gaza” scrawled on his cycling gloves, and makes a point to show them off every chance he gets, be it on live TV or on selfies spread out through social media.
But the Commonwealth Games Federation says that Azizulhasni’s fashion statement might amount to an act of political protest, something the CGF forwns upon. According to The Guardian, a spokesperson for the GCF has asked the Malaysian chief de mission for a report on the matter so that the governing body might have all the facts before deciding what to do.
Azizulhasni is scheduled to compete again tomorrow, after he qualified for the men’s quarter-final sprint.
