Namewee reveals shocking conditions inside detention center

After spending four days at the Bayan Baru police lock-up, one would think that rapper Namewee would now lay low and keep his mouth shut.

Well, he did the complete opposite.

The 33-year-old rapper, who was detained two weeks ago to facilitate investigations into his controversial music video “Oh My God”, took to his social media page to reveal the shocking conditions of the lock-up he was holed up in.

“I encountered about 15 illegal immigrants from Myanmar, some of whom had spent more than 30 days in detention.

“The cells they were placed in were small and in poor condition. With nobody to reach out to for help, they were stuck because their employers had fled with their identifications.

“The detainees were in poor health. Some of whom, I suspect, were suffering from tuberculosis,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

The posting has since been deleted.

Meanwhile, Penang police chief Comm Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab told The Star Online that Namewee’s claims were untrue.

Abdul Ghafar told the news portal that detainees who were sick or unwell would immediately be sent to the hospital for treatment.

“If he is sincere, then please lodge a police report so we can open an investigation.

“However, if the allegations are found to be untrue, we will investigate them as a false report,” he was quoted as saying.
