Update on Sept. 23: Doctors from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (HRC) have given former prime minister Najib Razak the green light to return to the Kajang prison.

According to a statement from HRC, the 69 year-old’s most recent checkup revealed that he was in good health. It further said that physiotherapists at HRC showed him how to perform exercises on his own.

“The results of his latest check-up by CRH’s rehabilitation specialist found that his health is now in good condition.

“He has also been taught by CRH’s physiotherapy trainer and can carry out the exercise techniques independently.

“Medical consultants from CRH and the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) have given him medical clearance and cleared him to be sent back to Kajang prison,” the hospital said in a statement today.

In a meeting with Najib’s family, the doctors also informed them of his current health status.

HRC said it remained committed to being transparent while treating and rehabilitating all its patients.

Najib was previously reported to have been sent to HRC on Monday for treatment and observation after being referred by HKL.

Khairy Jamaluddin, the minister of health, had earlier indicated that Najib’s relocation from HKL to CRH was due to his need for physiotherapy.

He said Najib has not received special treatment. He added that according to the ministry’s patient privacy policy, he was unable to provide specifics on Najib’s health.

Najib’s hospitalisation at CRH has generated controversy among those who feel he was avoiding spending time in prison.

He is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence after losing his last appeal against the High Court’s guilty verdict in his SRC International corruption case on August 23.

Update on Sept. 19: Since being jailed on Aug 23, we have witnessed several medical excuses from former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to get out of prison.

The latest one is his admission to the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (HRC) for treatment and observation.

The Prisons Department said in a statement today that Najib was sent for a medical check-up at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) after claiming that he felt unwell, before being transferred to HRC yesterday.

“Datuk Seri Najib will be sent back to Kajang Prison to serve his prison sentence as soon as HRC or HKL medical experts give him the medical all-clear.

“As the authority that executes its responsibilities under the Prison Act, the Prisons Department, in addition to carrying out the sentence that has been handed down, is also responsible for ensuring that the health of a prisoner is constantly monitored and cared for, including the provision of treatment facilities and medicine as recommended by government medical officers,” it said in a statement today.

Najib was previously reported to have been admitted to HKL on September 4. He is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence after losing his last appeal against the High Court’s guilty verdict in his SRC International corruption case on August 23.
