Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak chose to meet with the king instead of going to court this morning. But don’t worry, he hasn’t forgotten his appointment. He just needs his lunch first.
After being called out by the judge for being absent, the 68-year-old said online today that he was simply trying to be a man of his words as much as possible. Najib was among more than 100 Members of Parliament who were summoned to meet with the king at the Royal Palace to decide on Malaysia’s next prime minister. But the man accused of misappropriating state funds was also due to be in court today for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad trial.
“I take responsibility for everything as best I can. Official business this morning. Addressing His Majesty the King with members of Parliament,” he said on Facebook, including a photo of him scooping up rice from his plate.
“I will be back for court proceedings shortly,” he continued.
Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah told Najib’s lawyer earlier today that Najib should have at least come to court before his audience with the king as a matter of courtesy. Proceedings were expected to continue at 2pm.
