A muezzin or ‘bilal’ was sentenced to eight years in jail and two strokes of the cane yesterday after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy.

Free Malaysia Today reported that Akif Aiman Ab Shukor, 29, was convicted of molesting the victim and forcing the boy to perform oral sex on him at the Bukit Jambul Indah flats mosque in Penang on May 2, 2020.

He was charged under sections 14(a) and 15(f) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

During the verdict, judge Mazdi Abdul Hamid, said the prosecution succeeded in proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

In her earlier arguments, deputy public prosecutor Farah Aimy Zainul Anwar urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence due to the rise in cases of young boys being sexually abused.
