Youth advocate and politician Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman has won a legal suit against the Home Affairs Ministry, allowing him to officially register his political party.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today ordered the ministry to register the youth-oriented party, known as the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance, or MUDA, after Syed Saddiq’s application was rejected twice without any reason given. The party led by Syed Saddiq himself and 12 others, is expected to be registered within two weeks.

“We are not allowed to contest in elections… I myself am labeled an ‘independent’ member of parliament,” the 29-year-old Muar representative said online.

“But today is history. Finally, the High Court has decided to register MUDA as a legitimate political party within 14 days,” he added.

The ministry was also ordered to pay for the political party’s legal costs, worth RM10,000 (US$2,500).

Syed Saddiq filed to register his party with the Registrar of Societies, or RoS, in January and August before he made an appeal to the office and Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin in September. When The Vibes reporter asked about their registration status two months ago, Hamzah simply stated that MUDA was “not a party.”

If registered, MUDA will be Malaysia’s first political party made up of youths.
