MRT Corp CEO resigns over collapsed concrete span incident

After last night’s collapse of a 490-tonne concrete span at an MRT construction site near Kota Damansara left one worker dead and another two still missing, Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) CEO Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid has tendered his resignation.

MRT Corp’s corporate communications department has explained Azhar’s resignation will come into effect tomorrow. 

When contacted by The Malay Mail Online, Azhar confirmed, “Yes, I have resigned, because of yesterday’s accident.

“As the head of MRT Corp, I am taking personal responsibility for the incident and this is the correct thing to do. I have informed the Chairman of MRT Corp, Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, of my decision.”

At 8.30pm last night, a span of the MRT guide way dislodged from its piers and fell to the ground, as work was being carried out to construct the parapet for the guide. 

The collapsed concrete span was made of of 14 segmented box girders, measured 38m in length and weighed 490 tonnes. 

Earlier today, MRT Corp released a statement saying that one of the workers missing after the incident, Bangladeshi national Mohammad Elahi Hossain, was found dead at the scene. Another two Bangladeshi workers, Mohamad Faruk Khan and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik, are still missing. 

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak earlier today ordered a full investigation into the incident. 

Azhar himself last night vowed that MRT Corp would cooperate fully with authorities to ensure a comrehensive investigation. 

“No effort will be spared in getting to the bottom of this tragic incident. We will also not spare anyone whose actions are found to have caused or contributed to this accident,” he said in a statement.

Work at the affected Package V1 area has been halted until further notice.
