The Kelana Jaya LRT line in Kuala Lumpur resumed its operations using a single track at 6am today, after a train collision left hundreds injured last night.
A total of 213 people were injured in the crash, which took place in the tunnel – between the city’s busiest stations KLCC and Kampung Baru – at 8:30pm. Five shuttle buses were deployed this morning to support operations.
Photos and videos on social media showed injured passengers lying on the floor of the train, shattered glass, and emergency responders attending to those seriously injured onto stretchers and wheelchairs.
The collision between an empty train that was on a test drive and another carrying commuters towards Gombak station was caused by a fault, according to initial findings by the Dang Wangi police station. Seventy-five firefighters from five different stations in Kuala Lumpur were deployed to the scene.
Transport company Prasarana yesterday apologized to victims, in a statement that said: “We deeply regret the incident and will continue to monitor the progress of passengers involved in yesterday’s incident and will give full cooperation to the authorities.”
Full operations are expected to resume after three days of track repairs and cleanup.
