More than 500 children reported missing until May this year

These are worrying numbers: from January to the end of May, Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Children Investigation Division has recorded exactly 567 cases of missing children, Bernama reports.

“Of the 567 children, another 193 children are still missing and being investigated by police,”Bukit Aman CID (Investigations and Legal) deputy director Datuk Law Hong Soon was quoted as saying last week.

Law reportedly said figures showed Selangor as the state with the highest number at 285, followed by Johor, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur.

“A majority of cases were due to family problems, seeking freedom and running off with lovers or friends. Most of the children are between 12 and 18 years,” Law was quoted as saying.

He told Bernama that police have proposed the use of a Face Recognition System technology to detect missing children. The plan, however, was still in discussion.
