Mohamed Apandi Ali is our new Attorney-General, effective immediately

Abdul Gani Patail’s sudden termination as Malaysia’s Attorney-General due to health reasons has opened up the job for former Federal Court judge Mohamed Apandi Ali.

According to Chief Secretary to the Government Dr Ali Hamsa, Apandi takes up the position with immediate effect.

However, Gani will continue to serve in his capacity as the Judicial and Legal Service Officer until his mandatory retirement comes into effect on October 6 this year.

“Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail has contributed tremendously to the country as the Attorney-General. On behalf of the government, I wish to record my deepest appreciation and thanks for the service he has rendered and hope he will always be blessed with good health,” said Dr Ali in a statement, as quoted by The Star Online‘s Loshana K Shagar.

Prior to his termination, Gani was part of the Federal Government’s Special Task Force (along with the heads of the MACC, PDRM, and Bank Negara) assigned to investigate alleged criminality within sovereign development fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
