An ambulance driver, along with an accompanying female nurse, were attacked by a mob of mat rempit (a biker gang for lack of a better term) while they transported a patient between hospitals yesterday.

The early morning incident occurred along the North-South Expressway, near the Taiping Utara toll plaza, and saw the 53-year-old driver assaulted after he asked the group of mat rempit to heed his request via speaker to give way for the ambulance. The group was reportedly blocking the road off in order to race circa 1:30am.

Instead of obeying orders, they instead became incensed, and used their bikes to block the ambulance’s passage. The driver was then dragged from the vehicle by four to six teenagers, who then punched him. He required stitches on his head after the attack.

The nurse, who was attending to the patient in the vehicle, attempted to break up the fight, but was subsequently pushed to the ground by the mob.

Members of the public took notice, and the teenagers fled the scene. The ambulance continued on their journey to transport the patient, who arrived at Taiping Hospital safely.

Police have since identified the ringleader, and are investigating.

The location is a popular one with both illegal motorcycle and car racers, particularly on weekend nights between midnight and 3:00am.
