Mid Valley Megamall may be experiencing some lunch delays today: seventy-five undocumented workers were taken in by immigration authorities during yesterday’s lunch service.
The premises of Makan Place, the ground level food court, were raided by twenty-nine officers inspecting the validity of work documents of the one hundred and twenty foreign workers employed there. There are thirty vendors operating out of the food court, and the detained individuals were forced to fill out their own arrest forms.
Many of the female employees were seen in tears as they were led away by officials for processing. The fifty women, and twenty-five men picked up were mostly from Indonesia, although Bengali, Burmese, Chinese and Thai nationals were also arrested.
The raids come following the end a hard deadline for employers to get their act together to legalize their foreign workers via E-card by 30 June.
