Search and Rescue (SAR) operations by the Royal Thai Navy for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 might end soon if no new ground is broken, said a Navy commander yesterday.
However, the operation currently going on in Thai-Malaysian waters would resume if requested by Malaysian authorities, according to Vice Admiral Taratorn Kajitsuwan, chief of the Third Naval Area Command.
He explained that no additional vessels were needed as a close search had already been undertaken in the area assigned to the Thai Navy, namely in the Andaman Sea from Langkawi Island to Pangkor Island.
Yesterday, Thai Navy assets began searching a location 60 nautical miles north of Sumatra, where the Singaporean Navy had reported the sighting of passenger life vests. However, the search did not yield any results or any sign indicating Flight MH370 had touched down in the area.
Kajitsuwan said the search could be halted temporarily should there be no further sign of progress.
