MH370: Hobbit director lends personal jet to search efforts

Oscar-winning movie director Peter Jackson, responsible for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and now The Hobbit movies, has lent his personal jet to the ongoing search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

Australian authorities, coordinating the search for Flight MH370 in a remote section of the Indian Ocean nearly 2,000km southwest of Perth, said ta civilian jet was being used to assist military aircraft for signs of the Boeing 777-200ER jetliner.

After initially denying it was Jackson’s jet, a spokesperson for the movie director, a New Zealand citizen, later confirmed it was indeed Jackson’s aircraft, and that it had been chartered to Australian authorities, according to the New Zealand Herald daily.

Radio New Zealand reported that Jackson had personally approved the use of his personal jet, a Gulfstream G650, to assist in the search.

The jet was not donated to the search effort; instead, the company operating the jet for Jackson had accepted a charter offer.

The Gulfstream website says the G650 can carry eight passengers and a crew of four on nonstop legs of more than 12,900km.
