Police have arrested a 23-year-old unemployed man in connection with the stabbing of a local imam who was reciting the Quran over a loudspeaker yesterday morning.
Investigations into the incident allege that the individual was angered at having his sleep disturbed, and took drastic action at 6:30am at the Kampung Apal Mosque, located in Malaysia’s east coast state of Terengganu. He also tested positive for methamphetamine, so there’s that too.
His 37-year-old victim, named as Mohd Amin Nor, was injured on the left side of his chest, and required seven stitches. Acting as the imam at the Rantau Petronas Surau in nearby Kerteh, he had returned to his hometown to bury his father, who had passed away on Friday.
Reportedly, the suspect approached the victim from behind, and began stabbing him over the use of the loudspeaker. There were two other worshipers at the mosque during the incident. The suspect’s home was about 100 meters from the mosque.
The 23-year-old man is now in police detention, awaiting charges.
