Merdeka spirit: Retired soldier starts run from Alor Setar to Kuala Lumpur

Days after a motorcyclist embarked on a 15-day Merdeka motorcycle adventure, a retired soldier has one-upped the man’s efforts – by running from Alor Setar to Kuala Lumpur!

According to Bernama, 61-year-old Nasir Abas was flagged off at 7.30am by Kuala Kedah Umno vice-chief Datuk Abdul Mutalib Harun at the Zahir Mosque on Sunday.

Nasir, who served in the army for 21 years before retiring in 1998, hopes to achieve his goal of running more than 500km in less than ten days, right on time to celebrate Merdeka in the capital city.

He told the news agency that he aims to instil the spirit of patriotism among Malaysian youths, and his love for the country is the main driving force behind his epic solo run.

He will reportedly be flanked by two safety cars during his entire run.

Speaking of which, the retired soldier is no stranger to epic runs: in 2002, his name was listed in the Malaysia Book of Records after he ran 1,754km across the peninsula from Kelantan to Perlis in just 30 days.

Then, in 2003, he went on yet another epic solo run, by running 2,068km from Tawau to Kuching in 53 days.
