A crowd of 20,000 supporters is expected to turn up at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil this Saturday for a gathering celebrating and fostering Malay unity.
The Malay Unity Assembly is the brainchild of the Malay Consultative Council (MPM) with the cooperation of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Council (Teraju) and the National Covocs Bureau (BTN).
Despite the ethnic nature of the gathering’s scope and objectives, MPM secretary-general denied that the event was racist or political.
“This gathering has nothing to do with politics and racism.
“However, any non-Malay politicians or individuals are welcome to attend the gathering and be our friends,” he said, as quoted by The Star Online.
“We are not an activity that is racist and having racial elements, we want to rally the Malays so that we become united, blessed and respected,” Hasan explained to The Malaysian Insider.
The gathering also aims to instil an appreciation for maqasid syariah, or objectives of Islamic law.
“The only assembly that we have now is the Umno assembly, that is politics, but we don’t have any non-political assembly,” he said.
Also expected to attend the assembly will be Prime Minister Najib Razak and Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
