McDonald’s Malaysia makes “kangkung” reference in ad, pulls it down after the fact

Why, yes. Yes, we are still on the #kangkung train, and this time it’s McDonald’s Malaysia who’s reminding us of the country’s most controversial leafy green.

The fast food chain has pulled down an advertisement that made an oblique reference to Prime Minister’s Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s recent “kangkung” remark from its outlets nationwide.

The company told Malaysiakini the publicity material was “unapproved”, and was printed out and distributed anyway as an oversight.

“McDonald’s Malaysia wishes to clarify that due to a communication oversight, the unapproved visual was produced and made its way to our restaurants.

“All the materials have been immediately removed,” it said.

Najib referred to kangkung, or water spinach, in a speech while lamenting the fact Malaysians were constantly complaining of rising prices and were not thankful when prices of goods went down, as was the case at the time with kangkung.
