MB Azmin: Selangor to suffer critical water supply beginning next year

Selangor is on a collision course with at least two years of scarce water supply, said Menteri Besar Azmin Ali today.

According to Bernama, Selangor’s water woes are set to escalate from next year onwards, due to what Azmin says are the state’s biggest drains: a growing population, rising demand for water, and the delayed Langat2 Water Treatment Plant project.

While the PKR-led state government has built two other plants in Labohan Dagang and Semenyih, the switch in Langat2’s estimated start of operations from 2017 to sometime in 2019 is crippling the ability to provide enough water to residents.

“We have no choice but to build the two plants to meet the demand in this critical period other than the Mitigation 2 project handed over today,” Azmin said.

“Hopefully, this can help meet the demand.”

The Mitigation 2 project, which will involve water supply assets in Matang Pagar, Sungai Selasa, Sungai Selangor, and Rasah, will provide Selangor with an additional 227 million litres per day when it is completed.

Still, Azmin says his administration will urge Selangorians to be use their water sparingly.

“The water campaign will be stepped up among domestic consumers to reduce wastage because Selangor ranks among the highest in terms of water wastage.

“Wasting of water is unhealthy. We do not want the affordable tariffs to be the reason for the wastage,” he said.
