Mat Sabu: Parti Amanah Negara is running short on cash

The new Islamic/Islamist party led by former luminaries in Malaysia’s other Islamic/Islamist party PAS is running short on cash.

So admitted Mat Sabu, president of the newly-formed Parti Amanah Negara (PAN), adding that the party needs RM50,000 every month just to keep its operations afloat over at its headquarters in Gombak, where it has five people on staff.

“We admit that we are facing a lack of funds and that is why we organise dinners, donation drives and try other sources, including from Amanah parliamentary members to manage our operational costs, for now,” he told Sinar Harian today.

The part where PAN only has five people employed at its national headquarters is sure to raise a few eyebrows. The five staffers – a secretary-general, two deputies, and two administrators – are tasked with coordinating and managing Amanah initiatives throughout the entire country.

However, Mat Sabu stressed that the spartan nature of his party’s national office did not reflect its growing membership. From its official launch last August 31 to November, PAN claims to have signed up 60,000 members, and has distributed another 130,000 membership forms.

Mat Sabu, once the deputy president of PAS, also denied that Amanah had received millions in financial aid from its partner in Pakatan Harapan (and avowed nemesis of PAS) DAP.
