Massive sinkhole swallows car in heart of Kuala Lumpur

Good morning, and welcome to one of the more terrifying daily possibilities hanging over your head when you leave your house and get into your car: a sinkhole swallowing up you, and your vehicle, with little to no warning.

One driver was lucky to escape with her life on Sunday night after a three-meter-wide sinkhole abruptly opened up on Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Maharajalela, near Stadium Merdeka, and her yellow Perodua Myvi plunged right in.

The 42-year-old female driver was uninjured in the incident, which took place around 11:30pm.

As remote as the possibility of a vast, gaping hole suddenly opening up on the freeway may appear at first blush, it’s actually not the first time such a thing has happened in KL.

In 2014, a massive sinkhole appeared along Jalan Imbi as contractors worked on a nearby MRT station, causing massive traffic disruptions that lasted for months.
