A former loan shark has been sentenced to death for killing his wife by setting her on fire.
The High Court in Penang sentenced the unemployed Chiam Nguang Huat, 42, to hang for setting fire on his wife wife Lai Siew Fong, 37, and killing her, Free Malaysia Today’s Pradeep Nambiar reports.
The crime was committed in 2013, at Jalan Bayu Mutiara, Bukit Mertajam on June 24 after a quarrel. According to testimony by the couple’s two children, Chiam had poured petrol on Lai and threw a lit cigarette on the floor.
Lai suffered serious burns and was treated at the Penang hospital, but died three months later.
According to FMT, Chiam had fled and gone into hiding for nine months somewhere in the Klang Valley before he was arrested.
