Man tries to bribe cop at a roadblock, fails miserably

When he was caught driving without a valid license, a man tried to bribe his way out of a traffic summon, but he got hauled to court instead.

The New Straits Times reports that R. Mahasvaran pleaded guilty to giving gratification at the Special Corruptions Court in Seremban on Friday.

The 30-year-old was accused of offering a RM50 bribe to Inspector Mohammad Nasrun Ab Rahman at the Feldajaya junction in Jempol to conceal his offence on May 5 at 2am.

He pleaded guilty to the alternative charge under Section 214 of the Penal Code for offering gratification to conceal an offence, which carries a maximum seven years’ jail term upon conviction.

According to court papers as cited by the daily, Inspector Nasrun had stopped the suspect, who was driving a Mitsubishi Triton, at a roadblock.

When he asked the accused for his MyKad and driving license for inspection, R. Mahasvaran reportedly handed over his driving license and a RM50 note.

When Nasrun questioned him over the RM50, the accused answered that it was to “settle” his offence.

Judge Fathiyah Idris sentenced R. Mahasvaran to a RM1,500 fine, in default of three months’ jail.
